The Power of a Positive Attitude

Create a Positive Attitude

The human brain is designed to search for “threats,” which used to be a key element of human survival. In today’s society, though, this can lead to pessimism and high levels of stress. In order to create and maintain a positive attitude, you have to actively correct negative thoughts throughout the day. With practice, this habit will eventually retrain your mind to think in a more positive way.

Benefits of a Positive Attitude

Mayo Clinic research has proven that a positive attitude leads to a healthier life. Optimists have stronger immune systems, lower levels of cardiovascular disease and a longer life span when compared to pessimists. A positive outlook is not only good for your health, but it also improves productivity and performance at work and in your everyday life.

Tips for Staying Positive

  1. Focus on the Facts: Most negative thoughts are just thoughts, not facts about your life. Write down your thoughts or fears and then evaluate them to see if they are based on fact. If you wrote words such as: “never,” “always,” “worst,” etc, then those statements are most likely not true. Dismiss those thoughts and focus on solutions to your fact-based circumstances. This prevents unnecessary worry and stress.
  2. Always look for a positive: When you are having a good day, it is easy to point out something positive. When things are not going your way, though, try to identify something positive about the situation or about anything in your life. This will redirect your attention and help you better handle the issue at hand.
  3. Express Gratitude: Take some time each day to recognize what you are grateful for. Research conducted at the University of California shows that gratitude reduces stress and improves overall mood and energy levels.
