Preventing the “Afternoon Slump” and Staying Energized at Work

The Afternoon Slump

We have all been there, most likely more often than we would like to admit. After a busy, productive morning, the afternoon slump can hit hard anytime after lunch. This phase of the workday is when you feel your energy level drop, you lose motivation and you struggle to concentrate on the tasks at hand. Many people’s first thought during this phase, is to grab a coffee or sugary snack. However, this has negative impacts on your sleep patterns and blood sugar levels. Instead, here are some healthy tips for preventing the afternoon slump!

Tips for Preventing the Afternoon Slump

  1. One of the best ways to prevent a low energy afternoon, is to eat a wholesome breakfast that will help you power through the day. Something that is high in protein and fiber and low in added sugar, such as oatmeal. Oatmeal is packed with 6 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber per serving, and it provides a nutritious amount of B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and zinc. For an even healthier and energizing start, try adding cinnamon, walnuts and dates!
  2. A common reason for feeling fatigued and unproductive is dehydration. Be sure to drink a glass of water with breakfast and keep a water bottle close by during the workday. According to Healthline, staying hydrated positively impacts brain function, keeps your metabolism up, and helps keep you feeling full and satisfied between meals.
  3. Another way to stay energized is to stand up and stretch for at least 3 minutes every hour. This gives your mind a break and gets your blood flowing, which increase focus and attention, as well as improve cognitive functioning
  4. Jess Cording, a registered dietitian and health coach, explains that long work days force many of us to go too long without eating. So afternoon hunger could definitely be a cause of the afternoon slump. She states, “Snacking isn’t a sign of failure or lack of willpower- it can actually be a smart strategy for fueling your brain and body for an efficient work day.” Click here for the energizing afternoon snacks Cording recommends!
